TIE’!

ethernet power adapters

not bad… not bad at all… πŸ˜€

measurement from my living room:

and then…

measurement from the basement:

I just kept testing, all the way down the stairs on the public power plugs of the building… got into the basement, crossed from a building into the other (where I have my dedicated space in the basement) then… I lost the connection… damn! …k, I thought “well, I pay the bill in there… the power plug must be connected towards my counter, directly” … INDEED IT IS! πŸ˜€

I grow up as a DevOp

at job interviews I was always asked if I felt myself as a developer or a sysadm… both! why splitting the careers? and now finally the market is evolving confirming I choosed well πŸ™‚

during the discussion on testing tools, yesterday, it came out that all the test automation area, is still a grey area… “cucumber” seems to be the solution… but it covers only functional testing… “http-qat” was an internal project in the direction of a language to describe tests… now it has to be formalized. I’ll probably work on formalizing “cucumber” language specs for load and performance testing… trying to integrate with “tSung“, which seems indeed better than “grinder“, “HP RoadRunner” and “jMeter”…

I know my role

hudson, capistrano, buildbot, quality center …

I’m getting literally mad… I see something like the waterfall BuildBot diagram from Google and I’d like to study what do they have behind…
In the previous 3 years I went from nothing to “structured, .ini based, subversioned tests” usable for functional and also for non-functional testing. But, still… there was a Fitnesse instance on its own, an HP Mercury Quality Center (aka “MQC”) on its own, Hudson on its own, and deployment… by hand with tar.gz or zip files. 😦
Having a commit on the svn, going into Hudson, triggering Junit testing then Capistrano and automated functional and non-functional tests, reporting all back to MQC and creating a nice performance report, being able to compare build by build… seems science fiction. I see people creating stuff in MQC, doing Jmeter tests (basically rewriting the testcases) or with Selenium or HP LoadRunner… then installing stuff manually, or in the best case with Webistrano … and some other testing with Fitnesse. A mess…

I’d like to know experiences, from other people out there.

I have driven the development of the HTTP Quality Assurance Toolkit. At least, with that, we were able to do only once the test definition and being able to do functional & non-functional testing, and also Nagios monitoring.

I’m going to speak at DevOpsDays.org with an iGNiTe on Friday… about LoadTesting… not sure if to review my slides.

subqueries do not get cached

WTF???

…the cache is not used for queries of the following types:

* Prepared statements
* Queries that are a subquery of an outer query
* Queries executed within the body of a stored function or trigger

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/query-cache-operation.html

+

For certain cases, a correlated subquery is optimized. For example:

val IN (SELECT key_val FROM tbl_name WHERE correlated_condition)

Otherwise, they are inefficient and likely to be slow. Rewriting the query as a join might improve performance.

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/correlated-subqueries.html

I have 5 nested views… from 1 to 4, I have GROUP BY, ORDER BY, JOIN of the data over themselfs and other amenities… and on a ~2milion rows table, it doesn’t take more than 14 seconds…

the last view… has a subquery… evaluating the data related to the “currently evaluated row”, looking on the same table for values of “the same group”… and it gets DAMN SLOW… cause the “query cache” mechanism of MySQL does not kick in

k, tomorrow morning I go for the rewriting… I’ll create a VIEW about the data I need to be correlated, and I’ll JOIN it… let’s see πŸ™‚
